Pause for Thought
From Abdul-Rehman Malik, journalist and broadcaster:
Μύ
1986 marked two significant moments in my life: the return of Halleyβs Comet and my introduction to Top 40 music. They have more in common than you might think.Μύ
Μύ
Although I was never too keen on science class, astronomy fascinated me. One of my favourite weekend outings was spending time at the planetarium. My parents would buy tickets to two or three shows in a row, because they knew I wouldnβt want to leave. In that darkened theatre, I witnessed the Big Bang, saw nebulae being born, and rode the arc of the Milky Way.
Μύ
The coming of Halleyβs Comet after a 75-year hiatus gave me a real world astronomic mission. We set up the telescope in the backyard and night after night, I immersed myself in the majestic order of the heavens. The trouble was that the comet was rather hard to find. While my family slept, I slipped into the backyard to pursue my celestial treasure hunt.Μύ Brian, I think you would have approved of my dedication.
Μύ
There was a lot of good music on the radio that year, but the first cassette tape I ever bought was Invisible Touch by Genesis. I didnβt know the first thing about rock, but it was the perfect soundtrack to my year of fumbling with bewildering star charts and library books by Carl Sagan.
Μύ
God, according to the mystics, declared: βI was a hidden treasure and was not known. I loved to be known, therefore I fashioned creation and made Myself known, and so they came to know Me.β
Μύ
Today, over two million people gather near the holy city of Mecca to complete the rites of the yearly pilgrimage. They seek mercy and grace. After all, we are all searching for meaning, whether we find it in the study of the stars or in moments of quiet prayer.
Μύ
All believers have doubts. Iβd be a liar if I said I didnβt. But in the awe and wonder of the universe, I feel an βinvisible touchβ, of sorts. I find peace.
Μύ
Whatever paths we tread, may they lead us to uncovering that truest of hidden treasures: love. Because as Phil, Tony and Mike reminded us oh so long ago, in the land of confusion, there still isnβt enough to go around.
