Script

Good morning.Ìý Today has been declared by The United Nations as ‘The International Day of Older Persons’.Ìý

Ìý

While attention is often focused on youth in our society, it is estimated that there are 600 million people over 60 in the world. This will double by 2025 and reach two billion by 2050.ÌýÌý

Ìý

Concerned that dated stereotypes have often presented a false picture of aging, the World Health Organization, is keen to celebrate the contributions of older people.Ìý Many serve as volunteers in hospitals or in charitable work. Others care for families, friends and neighbours.

Ìý

Of course, growing older is not without difficulties. Some people struggle with poor health, and at times, whatever our age, we may look back and feel weighed down by regret. We may wish we had been more patient, kind or long-suffering.

Ìý

While we may lament some past word or deed, Christian faith reminds us that God stands ready to love and forgive.Ìý As the writer of Lamentations puts it:

Ìý

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercies never come to an end.Ìý They are new every morning.

Ìý

It is sometimes difficult to live each day looking forward. Life may bring crushing disappointment or grief that seems to cloud the future. A 93 year old friend of mine is one of the most positive people I know. In spite of the trouble she has known in life, she told me that she has learned to live every day in a spirit of thanksgiving to God.Ìý She believes God is faithful and knows God’s mercy will never come to an end. For me such faith is both an inspiration - and also a challenge.Ìý

Ìý

Loving God, be with those who have difficult decisions to make today. Give us all the peace of knowing that you are with us. Amen.
