Liam Logan heads to the Braidisland Gathering in Ballycarry, the east Antrim village proud of a Scottish heritage dating back to 1609, and every September Ballycarry hosts the biggest Ulster Scots day out of the year. Taking part in the 2014 festival are Amanda Robinson and Kenny Mitchell of the Alastair Scott Ceilidh Band, but why is Alastair himself not there playing with them?

Chairman of the Community Association Valerie Beattie tells Liam about the attractions at the Gathering, and reads us a special verse, and the Rev John Nelson has news of new banners displaying the history of the village. Billy Teare and Kathleen O’Sullivan are here to entertain the crowds with their tales, and historian John McCavitt from Rostrevor shares the story of Major General Robert Ross.

Liam has a crack with the folk determined to keep the hundreds of visitors to the Gathering well refreshed – those hard-working tea ladies; and as the sun shines down on David Hume, the Director of the day’s events, he finds himself looking up at this year’s Honorary Chairman, Tim McGarry, the long fellow who’s never short of a quip.
