Father Christopher Jamison, Benedictine Monk:

Ìý

Some weeks ago a Catholic nun, Sr Christine, made the news when she tore down a black flag flying over the gateway of an East London estate. She thought flying the flag was a sign of support for the so-called Islamic State that is carrying out atrocities in Iraq and Syria. I admire Sr Christine’s determination not to be a bystander but to take a stand against what she considers to be evil. There’s a saying attributed to the 18th century MP Edmund Burke ‘All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing’. This explains why Sr Christine took a stand and it also explains why over the weekend, British war planes joined the American led air war against IS. Whatever one thinks about the pros and cons of our military intervention, most people agree that IS can’t be defeated by military means alone. In the long run, the only way to get rid of this evil is by creating a better society that makes IS redundant. And that’s where ordinary people like Sr Christine come in. A European Union spokesman has estimated that 3,000 European citizens are currently fighting with militant groups in Iraq and Syria. So one way to hasten the end of this war is to work locally to create a society where young Muslims don’t feel drawn to violence. Sr Christine doesn’t just tear down flags, she works to improve the life of her local community which includes many Muslims. It helps to remember that Jews, Muslims and Christians all believe in God, the Father of Abraham. So I pray that the one true God may inspire us all to work together in new ways to create peaceful local communities.
