Pause for Thought

From Father Christopher Jamison, Benedictine Monk:

Ìý

Recently I was working with a group of young people in their twenties who were on retreat. A retreat is when people go somewhere quiet, switch off their phones and engage in dialogue about what matters most in their lives. This group was old enough to have done the student bit and they were now asking themselves the age-old question: ‘what do we really want out of life?’ To want something means to want to possess it, whether that’s a car or just a cup of tea. But these young people want more than just to possess things. They noticed that there’s another kind of desire that goes deeper than wanting. They talked about their deepest longings for love, for goodness and for God. They are ambitious for what St Paul called ‘the higher gifts,’ namely, faith, hope and love. As one said, this ambition needs to be more than daydreaming it has to be worked at. Another asked ‘but how can I be the best without becoming selfish?’

Ìý

These young people had hit upon something important.Ìý Longing for something is not about possession. It’s meaning is found in another word that derives from it, be-longing. To belong is to be loved. The challenge is to make sure that pursuing wants doesn’t suffocate these deep longings. I believe wisdom is balancing my wants and my longings, but few of us get that balance right. So I find it a salutary exercise at the end of the day to review how that day’s balance went, asking God to give me the grace to want less and to love more.Ìý As the student said – to be more than a daydream, it has to be worked at…
