Pause For Thought

From Canon Ann Easter, Chief Executive of a Charity and Chaplain to the Queen:

Ìý

Well here it is! My first Christmas catalogue! It came last week even before the summer Bank Holiday; and I know the weather’s not been up to much, but Christmas! Please!

Ìý

Of course, being the shrewd and sensible shopper that I am, I do have a little stash of Christmas cards and gifts, that I bought in the January sales; I just have to remember that I’ve got them before I start buying some more, and then I’ve got to remember where I put them. But I didn’t really want to start thinking about Christmas just yet.Ìý Jesus said ‘Sufficient unto the day is the evil there of, in other words, enjoy what today brings and don’t worry about tomorrow, let alone Christmas.

Ìý

Practice being in the moment; these days they call it mindfulness, it’s the knack, and they reckon you can learn it - of putting aside all the stuff that bothers and distracts us and concentrating only on what’s happening right this minute. Well, all right for some perhaps but as the Chief Executive of a charity and a wife and mother, I spend so much of my life planning and worrying about the next big thing. Sometimes I realise I’m not paying much attention to today. But then, what if today isn’t much fun?

Ìý

I have some sympathy with a person who sees the news on television with all its unremitting violence - then looks at the Christmas catalogue and thinks wistfully of that warm golden glow and our sure hope that the love and the life that Christmas promises is real. And I believe that it is. Christmas celebrates God’s love and God’s love is for the whole year and the entire Creation to comfort and strengthen us whatever life flings at us.Ìý So maybe my Christmas catalogue came as a comforter - just what I needed!
