Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy a Catholic Passionist priest:

Since the tragic death of Robin Williams, many of his most memorable quotes have re-appeared.听 One classic from Good Will Hunting has stayed with me. 鈥淵ou鈥檒l have bad times, but it鈥檒l wake you up to the good stuff you weren鈥檛 paying attention to鈥.

That鈥檚 how I鈥檝e been feeling in recent weeks. There鈥檚 been so much bad news on radio and on television that I find it hard to recognise 鈥渢he good stuff鈥. How can I not pay attention to Gaza, Iraq, Syria Ukraine to name but a few of the world鈥檚 trouble spots?

When Pope Francis faced the same dilemma he advised us to do all in our power to overcome hate and injustice, but never become so depressed by failure that we can鈥檛 raise a smile. 鈥淲e are bearers of Good News鈥, he said 鈥淒on鈥檛 be afraid to look happy; never forget the good that is achieved every day when good people conquer bad situations.鈥

The former World No1 Golfer Tiger Woods is going through a rotten patch as he slowly recovers from surgery. To keep positive he uses a verse which was given to him by his golfing hero, Arnold Palmer-

:

鈥淚f you think you鈥檙e beaten, you are /if you think you dare not, you won鈥檛

If you鈥檇 like to win but think you can鈥檛/ it鈥檚 almost certain that you won鈥檛

Life鈥檚 battles don鈥檛 always go/ to the stronger woman or man

Sooner or later those who win/are those who think they can.鈥

Each day I convince myself that my personal failures will become the doorway into the most neglected and possibly the most inspirational parts of me. My task is to stop being a prisoner of the past so that I can become the architect of a better future.

That鈥檚 why sports psychologist John Wooden always advised his young students-: 鈥淭hings turn out best, for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.鈥
