Pause For Thought

From Rev Ruth Scott, Anglican Vicar in Richmond:

Ìý

This summer you’d have to be a recluse cut off from civilisation to avoid news of wars, past and present. All of us, excepting those who are mad or whose sense of identity is tied up with the part they play in violent conflict, long for wars to cease. It’s one kind of ending we want unequivocally. Other endings can feel more complicated. I’m in the process of leaving a community that’s been my life for over fifty years as my faith journey takes me into a different expression of my core beliefs. After all that time, however right the step, there’s a great sense of loss with it. That’s why so many of the endings we’re confronted by, or choose, are hard to embrace: They come at a cost. Those of us living with bereavement know deeply the burden of grief. Some of us struggling to save ourselves from life-destroying addictions know the difficulty of doing so and the desire to have what is so harmful to us, even as we long to be free of its control. Others of us in destructive relationships may want a way out but feel unable to take it. Sometimes we stick with the life we know, even if it hurts like hell, because stepping into the unknown of new beginnings is more unnerving. I’d love to be able to say it doesn’t have to be that way, but sometimes it does. Sometimes we can’t take the ‘Calvary by-pass’ to get to where we want to be. Some endings are emotionally crucifying, even those that bring release from what hurts us and open up the possibility of new life. So, if my words echo where you are today take courage. Don’t give up when you feel overwhelmed. Instead, like me, give yourself breathing space before taking another step. Pain is sometimes par for the course but many have made the journey and come through to new experiences they previously never imagined possible. Seek them out. With their help you and I can also reach that place.
