Hazel Irvine looks ahead to the 2014 Open Championship, at Hoylake.

This time 12 months ago, Phil Mickelson lifted his first Claret Jug after coming from behind to clinch victory at Muirfield. Five weeks previously the American finished runner-up at the US Open for the sixth time, but he was in no mood to settle for second best in Scotland.

The tournament was last hosted at Hoylake in 2006, when Tiger Woods was at his imperious best en route to taking the Open Championship title.

2014 US Open winner Martin Kaymer will start among the favourites as The Open returns to Hoylake for only the second time in the last 50 years.
