Holland-Dozier-Holland Special

Craig's guest is Lamont Dozier from songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland, who gives his take on the writing partnership.

2014 marks the 45th anniversary of Detroit based soul labels 'Invictus', 'Hot Wax' and 'Music Merchant' - the three record labels established by songwriting team Edward Holland, Jr. Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier a.k.a Holland-Dozier-Holland, following their split from Berry Gordy's Motown empire in 1967. These guys have written tracks for, Martha & The Vandellas, The Miracles, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Four Tops.....the list is endless.

We hear from Lamont Dozier's take on the writing partnership. Craig will also put together 30 minute mix of their material in the section he calls 'The Trunk of Funk'. He'll also be speaking to a 6 Music listener who'll be taking us through their 3 favourite funk & soul tunes in the 'Spinage au Trois. We'll be shining the funk & soul spotlight on the 'Band of Gold' star Freda Payne in The History of Women In Funk & Soul. Freda Payne's biggest hit 'Band of Gold' was written by Holland Dozier Holland but she had to be persuaded to releases the track. But was she glad she did? Find out on tonight's show.
