Joe Westland
Joe Westland tells Neil MacKay about being captured by pirates off the coast of Nigeria and how he survived being held hostage for ransom.
It's a story of pirates, hostage and ransom in an exotic location. It sounds like the stuff of fiction, a best-selling thriller, but fiction became reality for life long sailor Joe Westland. Spending his whole life at sea, from a young boy on a fishing boat to a 64 year-old Captain of a cargo vessel, Joe Westland has been through it all. But he was unaware that his defining moment of fear, the biggest threat of his life, would come from other sea-farers - pirates. In this episode Joe talks to Neil MacKay about his horrific capture by pirates off the coast of Nigeria and how he survived being held hostage for ransom.
