Chris's Pause for Thought: Julia Neuberger
From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:
ÌýTonight our festival of Shavuot, Pentecost, begins with a whole night of studying, learning, laughing and, of course, (because it’s also the diary harvest festival) eating cheesecake, as my colleague Pete Tobias talked about yesterday. This is because Shavuot celebrates the giving of the law, so we’ll be running sessions all night, though I shall wimp out at midnight or so. It will be packed with people, starting with 400 or so. The mood will be one of excitement, anticipation, and energy, because people will know that they are in for a fun and informative night. The first session always has everyone together, and I get to chair it. We’ll be having a sort of balloon debate. The somewhat tongue in cheek story goes like this: In an age of speedy communication and digital overload, people are finding Ten Commandments a bit too difficult to remember. So, with ten people each pretending to ‘be’ one of the commandments, they will make the case for why ‘their’ commandment should still be included in the new proposed canon, of a mere three commandments. We’ll take a vote at the end, and see which of the Ten Commandments, and their proponents, make the cut. Will it be: You shall not murder? Or steal? Or commit adultery? Will it be about honouring one’s parents, or not making idols? I don’t know. Much will rest on the quality of the speeches of course, but it’s the content that will show us is which of the commandments they feel most strongly about maintaining. It’s partly a game, of course, but it’s got a serious edge. As people generally feel less clear, less certain, about their moral stance on all sorts of issues, this might force them to rethink some very basic, universally accepted views. We all need to have a think about our moral standpoints from time to time. Examine them. Test them. And then push to the top of the list things we hadn’t been doing before, like honouring our parents, and not coveting other people’s possessions. Rethinking our moral stance can, and should, change how we behave. And that’s a good thing!
