Katie Derham introduces music by Mozart, Respighi, Tippett, Lawes and Saint-SaΓ«ns with the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Scottish Symphony Orchestra, including material from a forthcoming commercial release - and also, Dylan Thomas Day, with a poem by the Welsh bard every hour on the hour, introduced by Ian Macmillan.
The programme starts with the poem Fern Hill, read by Richard Burton. It's followed by Mozart's Symphony No. 39 in E flat major and Respighi's suite The Birds. Then, another poem by Thomas, There Was a Saviour, read by Ian McMillan. It's followed by Tippett's Double Concerto and an arrangement of a Fantasy by William Lawes, orchestrated by Andrew Manze, who conducts the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Scottish Symphony Orchestra in repertoire from a recent concert recorded in Inverness. Then, material from a ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ SSO forthcoming commercial recording of cello music by Saint-SaΓ«ns, also conducted by Manze, this time with soloist Natalie Clein. First, his Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, and La Muse et le poΓ¨te, in the version for violin, cello and orchestra, recorded in Glasgow. Violinist Antje Weithaas accompanies Clein. In between these two French pieces, another contribution by Dylan Thomas, his poem Love in the Asylum, read by the poet himself.
