Rob Maclean asks if it's time to get tougher on motorway middle lane hoggers.
New measures, introduced last August, mean drivers could get an on-the-spot fine of Β£100 and 3 penalty points on their licence, rather than being taken to court, for "careless driving" offences. Figures obtained by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ show that since then Police Scotland have punished just over 1600 careless or inconsiderate drivers but that very few motorists across the UK are being fined by the police for tailgating or hogging the middle lane. When introducing these new powers ministers said they would make it easier to tackle problem motorists but the AA said a third of all drivers now risked facing a fine.
