Muhammad Ali: The Hip Hop Heavyweight

To mark the 50th anniversary of boxer Muhammad Ali becoming world heavyweight champion, Charlie Sloth asks whether he was the first hip hop heavyweight...

Charlie Sloth sets out to investigate if Muhammed Ali was the original Hip Hop Heavyweight by disecting his wordplay and exploring how his poetic boasting in the lead-up to his fights pre-date the characteristic stage demeanour of hip-hop MCs.

Brash, young, and quick witted, Ali fought with a style that reflected his personality. He floored the world with his ability to drop verses outside the ring as quick as he could floor an opponent inside the ring.

With special contributions from Dead Prez, Big Daddy Kane, Akil, Pharoahe Monch, Trevor Nelson, Chip, former rap battler Lunar C, Common, and Ali's close friend George Lois.
