Female GPs

There are more female GPs now than male, according to new figures from the Health and Social Care Information Centre – numbers which have risen by 50 per cent in a decade, while the number of men fell in the last year. But with the proportion of women set to increase and lead to more and more part-timers, and doctors leaving to be mothers after expensive medical training, is this an added burden to the NHS? Is the feminisation of general practice contributing to the β€œcrisis” in general practice? Or is it a long term benefit? Should more be done to enable GPs to return after motherhood? And does medicine need to change its working patterns so female doctors are attracted to other areas of medicine too? To discuss, Jane is joined by the new Chair of the (RCGP), Dr Maureen Baker.
