Rev David Latimer

David Latimer has been the minister of First Derry Presbyterian Church for twenty-five years. During that time he has experienced life in an often-divided community. Several years ago, David spent some time as an army chaplain in Afghanistan where he witnessed at first hand the horror of war. Intent that these scenes should never return to his city, David has led several community building projects, including The Pathway To Peace. This project involved school children from across the city coming together to create twenty-five word peace pledges that were then written onto clay tiles. These tiles now form a pathway around Derry’s Peace Garden which contains the only World Peace Flame in Ireland.Ìý

Blessing given by Fr Paul Farren and Archdeacon Robert Miller

The blessing is taken from Saint Patrick’s breastplate, a popular prayer attributed to the patron saint. According to tradition, Patrick wrote the prayer in 433A.D. for divine protection before successfully converting the Irish King Leoghaire and his subjects from paganism to Christianity.
