Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:

Μύ

Last week, we had a record attendance of tiny tots at our tots' service. It's mostly more for the parents than the children, but we sing a strange version of Hallelujah, praise God, with boys and girls taking it in turn to leap to their feet, we sing the blessings over wine (juice) and bread, and we teach them a few words and numbers in Hebrew. The children jump and play and dance round our Noah's Ark inspired children's synagogue. It is, without doubt, fun. But it's also very moving. Here are young parents bringing their children to a service essentially designed for them, before those children can really understand. It's saying something profound about belief in the future. It's saying something important about carrying on a tradition from generation to generation. It tells us that children can get a bit of a sense of the spiritual, and of what it means to be part of a community, before they can speak properly or really understand. Two weeks ago, in Madurai, India, we saw a father introducing his tiny son to ceremonies in the Sree Menakshi temple. That child, too, was too young to understand. Last week, I heard a Muslim mother on the bus telling her toddler stories from the Koran. All faith communities do this. But we’re doing it in a world where children – and their parents- get bombarded with so many other attractions and impressions. We’re in a major competition for attention. Yet many of us are seeing far more little children being brought to join the congregation than before, at prayer, and at play. We should be proud and pleased.

We should be proud and pleased. But at our synagogue we should also be asking ourselves whether our other services and activities are compelling enough, and motivating enough, so that they want to keep coming when they’re old enough to choose for themselves? I hope we can, but the faith of those young parents in the future is something that’s worth cherishing, and fostering- we absolutely must not let that next generation down.
