Pause for Thought: Brian D'Arcy

Pause for Thought: Brian D'Arcy

From Father Brian D’Arcy a Catholic Passionist priest:

Every morning I remind myself to make the best of this day; because I realise my past is much greater than my future. As singer Willie Nelson once put it: β€œI’ve a wonderful future behind me.” This is not a pessimistic way to live, far from it. It’s a forceful reminder not to waste my life on unimportant issues.

So much so that I’m really convinced everything in life has its own beauty if only we took the time to appreciate it. Often, it’s not our fault. The rush of life robs us of the joy of living healthily.

One of my spiritual heroes is Thomas Merton – a most insightful writer and thinker who influenced leaders as diverse as Dr Martin Luther King Jr, Sen Robert Kennedy, and singers Joan Baez and Bob Dylan.

Merton became a believer in his early 20s and was an esteemed New York Times reporter at 24. But at 26 he put all his possessions in a duffle bag, left his brilliant future behind, and became a Trappist monk in Kentucky. From the solitude of the monastery he convinced millions to think seriously about the importance of their apparently ordinary lives; his constant theme was that each of us is a masterpiece of God’s creation.

It’s years now since I saw the film Bruce Almighty yet I still remember words which the writers had God speak. It went something like this. Parting your soup is not a miracle Bruce; at best it’s a magic trick. A single mom who’s holding down two jobs and still finds time to take her sons to soccer practice, that’s a miracle. A teenager who says no to drugs and yes to education, that’s a miracle. People want me to do everything for them when they have the power themselves. You want to see a miracle Bruce? Be a miracle.

I love that attitude.

A fulfilled life begins by making the best of the hand we’re dealt. I’m happy knowing that we only live once, because if we do it right, once is enough.
