Crowdscape: Stevenage
JP Devlin meets the people on Queensway in Stevenage town centre. Quietly known as “space city”, many of the world’s satellites are built there. It’s home to an aerospace company which built the first British ballistic missile – the “Blue Streak” – in the 1950’s. Nowadays it builds scientific equipment for dozens of space missions including the Rosetta probe- awoken this week to explore comets in outer space.

Ed Iglehart grew up in the segregated Florida of the 1940s and 50s, in a family where each of his eight great-grandparents had owned slaves. The segregation mantra was ‘separate but equal’ and everything from theatre entrances, beaches, buses and schools had separate provision for Black and White. Ed, who now lives in Scotland, tells Saturday Live how he was brought up with racism, and how, as the civil rights movement gained momentum, he came to be a part of it.
