Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Rev’d Rob Gillion, Rector of Holy Trinity Church and St Saviours:

Ìý

I am in the middle of a flurry of carol services and concerts. The traditional carol service is the version every one loves the best. ÌýI was amused that outside our church on Saturday on Sloane Square in London, there were two brass bands fighting it out. Everyone loves a good sing song.

Ìý

Ìý

There is a fair bit to do still, so my wife Janine and I went to to the 24 hour supermarket near to midnight yesterday. Instead of the usual musak they were playing carols. We sang our way round the store, and then we couldn't resist it as we danced down the aisle to 'It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas' There were a few strange looks, but other shoppers and staff joined in. It was such fun!

Ìý

Ìý

I have since learnt the word carol means to dance in a circle to a song of praise and joy. The power of song to transform, even shopping!

In the lead up to Christmas I lead a carol concert or service nearly every evening and each one brings its own unique magic. At the last one I led, I witnessed the most moving group of carol singers. It was a choir made up of stroke survivors. They were a real mix of people – they included a former university lecturer, a PA and a coach driver., ÌýNow they all struggled for three weeks to learn to sing a couple of simple carols finishing with Jingle Bells!! ÌýAlthough that evening the youngsters in a school choir sang beautifully, the stroke choir moved us to tears with their smiles and struggles.

Ìý

Ìý

Courage, compassion and carolling surely are the hall marks of a cracking Christmas. Ìý

Ìý

Ìý

The angels too sang to welcome the birth of Jesus offering peace on earth and goodwill to all.Ìý

Ìý

Ìý

I hope that at least some of you will be able to go a carollingÌýand make a song and dance of it!!
