Power Lister Professor Dame Carol Black on her route from history graduate to becoming one of the country's leading doctors. The message behind this week's drama inspired by real life stories of child exploitation and grooming. A quarter of midwives are so disenchanted with the profession that they're thinking of leaving according to a survey of more than a thousand members of the Royal College of Midwives which it is publishing ahead of its annual conference. Two experts from organisations supported by Children in Need discuss identifying those at risk. It's Monday and if you don't feel your best, that's no surprise according to one American study. In theory that makes it a good day for advertisers to bombard you with products to give you a lift. To what extent do they gauge our moods and do they get it right? Ex-nanny Nina Stibbe on her role in the domestic set-up of an unusual literary family.

According to the Royal College of Midwives, a quarter of midwives are so disenchanted with the profession that they’re thinking of leaving.Ìý They surveyed more than a thousand members ahead of their annual conference. Jane is joined by Cathy Warwick, Chief Executive of the College to hear why they’re unhappy.

Mood Marketing - Ads Aimed at Women at a Low Ebb

Women feel at their least attractive on Monday mornings, according to a study by American marketing company PHD.Ìý So, PHD suggests that Monday is the perfect day to present women with adverts for instant beauty rescues and dressing for success.Ìý On Thursdays, women feel at their best, so this is the best time to bombard them with positive, life-affirming products.Ìý This is in the US, but what is happening in the UK? Professor Dame Carol Black

Dame Carol Black is now the principal of Newnham College, Cambridge, but she is also still the county’s leading expert adviser on health at work, she’s advised both the present and previous governments – believing passionately that working plays a vital part in our health. As a consultant rheumatologist, she undertook pioneering research in scleroderma and set up a world renowned centre at the Royal Free Hospital in London. Not only has she been a leading specialist in her field, but a leader of her profession – a former National Director for Health and work, former Chairman of the Nuffield Trust, former Chairman of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and a former President of the Royal College of Physicians. Jane talks to Professor Dame Carol Black about how a working glass grammar school girl with a third class degree in history forged an unlikely path to become one of our leading doctors.

Children In Need Drama - Child Sexual Exploitation & Grooming

To mark , this week’s drama looks at child sexual exploitation and grooming. Holding On To You by D.L.Weller tells the story of a 14 year old girl called Holly, who is groomed and sexually abused after she becomes involved in a relationship with an older man. It’s inspired by real stories, and by the work of organisations supported by Children in Need, such as the charity and the network. To discuss the issues raised by the drama – the signs of child sexual exploitation and grooming, who is affected, and what can be done to help – Jane is joined by Sheila Taylor, Chief Executive of the NWG, and by Nicola Dalby, Acting Chief Executive Of Safe & Sound, which was involved in the writing of the series.
