It's a jam-packed return to the early shift, with Sara Cox joining Chris live in the studio to announce the launch of a brand new Saturday night show, right here on Radio 2. It's Sounds of the 80s! Cue the 80s tunes, as the poptastic pair re-visit the good, the bad, and the ugly from the decade.

Pause for Thought

We’re in the middle of the ten days of penitence in our Jewish calendar right now- it started on Jewish New Year, last Thursday, and finishes at the end of the Day of Atonement, next Saturday evening. During these ten days, we’re supposed to make amends to any human being we’ve wronged during the past year, as well as think about our actions more generally and repent of any wrongdoing, especially where there’s no-one to apologise to. It’s a mini version of  days of reckoning, and I’m always amazed by how many little notes I get from people apologising for something they’ve done they thought had upset me, something I can’t even remember. And during these ten days I ring people I think I might have offended- either by something I said or more often because I haven’t been in touch enough. It’s very hard to do- and you really have to grit your teeth to summon up the courage to say sorry to someone you think might not take it too well. But it’s enormously worthwhile. I’ve become really close to one or two people who I’ve apologised to over the years or they to me. It’s a spiritual exercise that’s very practical in its results-it functions as what some life coaches call ‘life laundry’- looking at yourself and your actions, and cleaning yourself up- your behaviour, your actions, your treatment of others. It doesn’t need just to be for Jews, though it’s part of our calendar. Regular self-examination and making one’s peace with others is very healthy for all of us. And it’s amazing how good one feels afterwards, even if exhausted. Each year, at the end of the Day of Atonement,  I’m  completely washed out, but I also feel renewed, ready for the year ahead, at peace with myself and others. I think we could all gain from doing a bit of this, though I warn you it’s by no means easy.
