Wayne Shorter 80th Birthday

Jez Nelson is joined by Trish Clowes in a special programme celebrating saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter's 80th birthday, featuring live recordings of his current quartet.

80th birthdays of the greatest living jazz musicians don't come around too often, so we're taking the opportunity to celebrate one this week. Saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter's career is remarkable - not only for his roles in groups such as the classic Miles Davis second quintet and flagship jazz-fusion group Weather Report, but for the fact that he's still producing ground-breaking, exhilarating music with his current quartet.

It's that group that forms the focus for this programme: Jez Nelson is joined by Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ New Generation Artist and Shorter aficionado Trish Clowes to pick out highlights from three performances by the group, recorded by Jazz on 3 over the last 12 years. They'll also be discussing his enduring achievements, with archive interviews featuring bandmates from across the decades, and Mr Shorter himself.
