Episode 16
George harvests seed from blue poppies, Chris examines the RHS new 'Hardiness Rating' for plants, and Carole is in Aberdeenshire showing how to keep the base of fruit trees clean.
In the Beechgrove Garden, it is eye-scorchingly bright as Jim, Carole and George take a look at the success or otherwise of their annual planting schemes around the garden. The oranges and lemons scheme, the emerald and coral 35th anniversary scheme and the bee-friendly hardy annuals have on their best summer attire.
George, meanwhile, shows how to harvest seed from those wonderful late-spring blue poppies or meconopsis, and then shows how to sow the fresh seed to easily and cheaply increase our stock.
Chris takes a look at the Royal Horticultural Society's new hardiness rating for plants. Chris examines the new categories and explains how understanding them will allow more success in our gardens. Chris then widens the discussion out to 'right plant right place', and shows how to read plants in order to work out where they can be situated and how then to push the boundaries of the hardiness index.
Carole is with Donna Speed in Tarland, Aberdeenshire. Donna wrote in with some fruit-related problems in her garden. Carole teaches Donna how to keep the fruit trees clean around the base, protect them against rabbits and understand pollination. Carole and Donna also dress up a dull concrete area in a simple but stylish manner with some alpine troughs.
