Good Morning

We seem to live our lives in increasingly public ways now, through computers, phones, and all manner of other devices.聽 And even if we don鈥檛 鈥済o in鈥� for social media ourselves, it鈥檚 often hard to avoid getting caught up in the constant sharing of photos, captions and comments, one way or another.听听听听 And of course, there can be a darker side to all of this.

The advance of technology has played a huge part and this has moved very quickly- and with it our sense of what鈥檚 private and what isn鈥檛.聽 Just 55 years ago today, the television programme Candid Camera was first broadcast in America. 聽The basis for the show was a secret camera set up to film people in situations in which something unexpected would happen to them 鈥� often with funny results, at least from the audience鈥檚 point of view.聽 Looking back, I suppose it was the first time we got a chance to see random, unknown people caught up in ordinary situations, albeit with an unexpected twist.聽 The punch line, inevitably, was:聽 鈥渟mile, you鈥檙e on Candid Camera鈥�.聽 Today, people themselves wield the cameras, and by sharing images and text on social media, they broadcast to the world their own personal version of life 鈥� theirs and others鈥�.聽 The ease with which all of us can share every aspect of our lives via the internet raises many questions about how we manage that technology, so that the end result is indeed a smile for the candid camera.

聽Lord of life, help us to be mindful of the ways that our lives connect with the lives of others, let us celebrate the electronic ability we have to share ourselves with the wider world, but give us wisdom to use that technology wisely.聽 Amen听听听听听听 听听听听听听听听听听听听聽
