Alan Fernie is one of the top arrangers of his generation with brass bands all over the world playing his music, a fact which pleases and amazes him in equal measure. Tonight he talks to Frank Renton about what he thinks makes a great arrangement, recalls being tipped Β£50 after conducting a performance of his own controversial arrangement of the Madness hit Baggy Trousers and explains why he called time on his career as a professional trombonist.
