Good morning!

Every parent works hard to put food on the table. In our country we’ve always had plenty. We even get out of season fruits all year round. Our farmers produce more food than we need.

Yet, in 1985, East Africa was devastated by droughts and famine. In July of that year, various charities helped raise millions of pounds to come to their aid. We’ve seen many droughts since then, yet we continue to be wasteful. Left over food is scraped into bins whilst people, even here at home, go hungry.

I need to change so that my children can learn from me - dish out only how much I can finish, eat whatever is put on the table, save the leftovers for the next day or freeze them so that there’s no wastage. It also helps save time and money.

Millions of poor could be fed daily by the food that every household, school, restaurant and hotel wastes. The Qur’an tells us to eat and drink but not be wasteful otherwise we’re brothers and sisters of Satan. Pope Francis has likened wastefulness to stealing from the poor.

If we had to ration our food to feed our family until the next harvest, we wouldn’t throw any away. If we had to walk a mile to fetch water we wouldn’t waste it.

Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The worst vessel that one could fill to the brim is one’s stomach." So, he recommended one third for food, one third for water and one third left empty for air.

Dear God, help us stop being wasteful and make us appreciate what you give to us, amin.
