Big Church Day Out

The Big Church Day Out is a Christian music festival now in its fifth year.Ìý Based in the Wiston estate in West Sussex, it celebrates Christian unity through music performed by some of the world’s best-known Christian acts. Diane hears from organiser Tim Jupp, himself a former musician, and land owners Harry and Pippa Goring, to find out how they worked together to bring about the first Big Church Day Out in 2009. Michael Eavis

Michael Eavis is a dairy farmer from Somerset who orchestrated one of the biggest music festivals in the world – Glastonbury.Ìý Since 1970, Michael has welcomed music-lovers to his Worthy Farm in Pilton, which now attracts over 170,000 festivalgoers.Ìý Michael, whose father was a Methodist preacher, regularly attends the nearby Pilton Methodist Church and he reveals to Diane that he enjoys singing hymns on a Sunday just as much as the bands at the festival.

Martin Smith
Martin Smith is a guitarist and vocalist who shot to fame as the front-man for the Christian rock band Delirious?.Ìý The band received critical acclaim during a 17-year journey that led them to several top 20 hits in the UK charts, including ‘See The Star’, ‘It’s OK’ and ‘Deeper’.Ìý After the band decided to split in 2009, Martin has launched a solo career. He performs a special acoustic rendition of ‘I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever’ for Songs of Praise, in the Wiston Estate’s own private chapel.

Rend Collective
Hailing from Bangor in Northern Ireland, the six-piece musical act are well-known for their vibrant, energetic performances. The Rend Collective Experiment was formed in 2002 when a group of 15 people looked to find ways to reinvent worship in modern-day culture. Rend Collective perform their track ‘Build Your Kingdom Here’, a song described by the band as ‘an old fashioned revival prayer’ for their homeland.

Dave Griffiths
At the Glastonbury Festival in 2003, Dave had an strong spiritual experience whilst watching blues singer Eric Bibb perform on stage.Ìý Dave was inspired to become a performer who, like Eric Bibb, worshipped God through his performances. Based in Bournemouth, Dave is now a successful singer-songwriter performing in music festivals and a wide range of venues around the UK.
