I’ve never understood the idea of an adventure holiday, an oxymoron if ever I heard one. For me a holiday is time spent relaxing and having fun with friends and family. An adventure is not that. It’s time spent being challenged, exhilarated maybe, sometimes put in danger - and sometimes adventures can take you right to the edge.

Many people like the idea of an adventure because it gives you the chance to tell tales of daring-do and exciting exploits that will impress your friends and children. But actually going through one may not be that great at the time. A friend once told me that if you don’t feel at some point so challenged that all you want to do is go home, you can’t define it as an adventure. I know what he means.

I had an adventure once – I was on a boat in Antarctica that struck an underwater rock tearing a hole in the side. ??The boat began to sink. I remember feeling fear and panic, I remember gripping the rail on the deck and the look of the cold, grey sea - icebergs floated past in the distance. I remember the feeling of being utterly vulnerable and helpless. The distant snow covered mountains were indescribably beautiful, but as the boat tipped I felt as if I was looking that great, mysterious spirit that authored the universe straight in the eye and I simply said – help. ??

My adventure brought me face to face with the wonder and the mystery of mortality. I thank God for adventures, I just don’t want to have them too often.
