6 Mix celebrates Dance Pioneers throughout May, continuing with the originator of Detroit techno, Derrick May.
Throughout the month of May, 6 Mix is shining a light on a selection of Dance Pioneers. So far in the series Grandmaster Flash, Sasha and Ed Banger's Busy P have taken to the 6 Music decks and the shows continue this week with the originator of Techno, Derrick May.
May - best known for his 1987 dance anthem Strings of Life under the name Rhythm Is Rhythm - has been an iconic name on the techno scene for over twenty years, DJing worldwide to a devoted fan base and pioneering the scene's distinct, hard sound. Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, May's work - alongside that of Juan Atkins and Inner City's Kevin Saunderson - has provided a catalyst for a number of producers worldwide.
