Joanna started out writing historical novels under the name Caroline Harvey then her attention to the factual past with Britannia's Daughters, a study of women in the British Empire. We know her best for her many hugely successful contemporary works of fiction that delve into the complex areas of family life and relationships and how these are changing in the modern world. Her books have been translated into over twenty-five languages and several have been adapted for television. She was awarded an OBE in 1996 for Services to Literature.
