Delhi Rape – Is this a genuine turning point for women in India?

The brutal rape and murder of a 23 year old woman in Delhi has sparked outrage across India and has been reported around the world. The woman in question boarded what she thought was a public bus to return home after an evening out. She was savagely beaten, gang-raped and left for the dead on the side of the road. Six suspects have since been arrested, charged and the preliminary court proceedings resumeΒ today. Violence against women is a common fact of life in India yet following this case women and men have taken to the streets to protest against the culture of violence. So could this be a watershed moment for women in India? Jane speaks to Vrinda Grover a human rights lawyer in Delhi.

In a journalist, Lloyd Evans, claimed that the male side of the feminist struggle has been airbrushed from history. He joins Jane Garvey and writer and broadcaster, Bea Campbell, to debate if this imbalance really exists and if Lloyd’s claim that men gave women feminism stands up historically.

Rae Earl - My Mad Fat Diary

Rae Earl tells us how her Mad Fat Diary has made it to a television series on E4. Based on her teenage diaries they describe the tribulations of being a boy-mad, overweight Morrissey fan living with her mother in Stamford, Lincolnshire. The diary has been described as β€œfunnier, sadder and ruder” than Adrian Mole, and it’s non-fiction. In January 1989 a 17 year-old Rae had returned home from a stay in a psychiatric ward after a nervous breakdown and the diary charts her attempts to lose weight, get a boyfriend and lose her virginity.
