This week Adam Walton meets Professor Mike Bruford at Cardiff School of Biosciences, who has spent more than two decades using the techniques of DNA fingerprinting to help preserve populations of endagered species in the wild. Since the early, pioneering days of DNA being used to catch criminals, Mike has applied the science of genetics to study species such as westernΜύlowlandΜύgorillas and orangutans, developing innovative ways of collecting DNA samples in natural habitats, and working with governments and conservation organisations on ways to help stem the decline of endangered species.
