The US Senate approves a deal to stop tax hikes and spending cuts. NHS treatment for the obese is 'poorly developed', says the Royal College of Physicians.

* The US Senate has voted to approve a last minute compromise deal to head off a series of steep tax rises and automatic spending cuts known as the Fiscal Cliff. The deal was done in the early hours of this morning but still has to be approved by the House of Representatives.

* A report by the Royal College of Physicians claims NHS obesity services across the UK are 'extremely patchy'. They say a doctor should be appointed at every hospital trust to oversee obesity treatment.

* The January football transfer window opens.
