In the midst of mass protests in Egypt, sparked when President Morsi gave himself sweeping new powers, and in the run up to a referendum on Saturday on the proposed new constitution, how does all this affect Egyptian women? How does the constitution impact on women’s rights? Hundreds of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets calling for Morsi to step down, whilst counter protesters have voiced their support. Yet there have been reports of an increase in sexual assaults and harassment against women on the streets, and accounts of female protestors being brutally attacked. So is this making women fearful to stand up and protest? To explain more about Egyptian women’s rights in the unrest, Jenni is joined by the Â鶹ԼÅÄ’s Shaimaa Khalil in Cairo.
