Episode 18 of 32

Mark Kermode meets Ben Affleck, Michael Smith looks at our relationship with death, and Deborah Orr, James Brown and Miranda Sawyer discuss Lucy Kirkwood's latest play.

The Culture Show comes from the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, home to an exhibition of work from legendary American photographer Ansel Adams. Mark Kermode meets Academy Award winner Ben Affleck to talk about his new movie Argo. Based on real events, the film tells the remarkable story of an attempt to spring six Americans from Iran in the late 70s by faking a Hollywood science fiction movie. In the second part of our survey of the shortlist for the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction, former contender Andrew Graham-Dixon reviews books which take their readers as far afield as 19th-century Sweden, the pathways of ancient Britain and the slums of Mumbai. On the eve of the Wellcome Institute's exhibition about death, Michael Smith examines our relationship with the grim reaper and explores how we commemorate, celebrate, ponder, and fear death throughout art and culture. And journalists Deborah Orr and James Brown join Miranda Sawyer to discuss the latest play from Lucy Kirkwood. NSFW is set in the editorial offices of magazines, and explores the power games and pornography in the media.
