Undercover Policing and Intimate Relationships
The practice of undercover police officers forming long term and intimate relationships with individuals whom they are spying will be discussed at an event at the House of Commons hosted by the Green MP Caroline Lucas. Caroline joins Aasmah to explain why she thinks this practice should be prevented. They are joined by Jan Berry, former Chair of the Police Federation.
Women and Gaming
Computer games companies are trying to encourage more women to take up gaming as their traditional market of 18-25 year old men has reached saturation point. But why are some women reluctant to be seen as gamers? Â Â Aasmah is joined by Lucy Kellaway, a Financial Times columnist who recently sat on the judging panel of the GameCity Prize and Naomi Alderman, a novelist and games writer.
Noor Inayat Khan
On Thursday, the first ever statue of a Muslim woman in the UK will be unveiled in a London square by Princess Anne. Noor Inayat Khan is one of only three wartime women to have been awarded the George Cross, the highest decoration for gallantry away from the field of battle. Like her more famous counterparts, Odette Hallowes and Violette Szabo, Noor was an undercover agent in the Special Operations Executive Unit during the Second World War. Her biographer Shrabani Basu has led the campaign for the bronze bust to be erected, with support from prominent British Asian women including Shami Chakrabarti, Gurinder Chadha, and Valerie Vaz MP. Shrabani spoke to Sheila McLennan on Woman’s Hour last year, and explained why she believes Noor Inayat Khan deserves a permanent memorial.
Woman’s Hour Power List: Alexandra Shulman on Fashion
Who wields the real power in the world of fashion? Is it the designers? The buyers? Or the journalists writing in the glossy magazines? The editor of British Vogue, Alexandra Shulman, talks to Aasmah Mir about the women who really decide what buy and what we wear.
Malala Yousufzai
There has been shock across the world at the shooting of the Pakistani schoolgirl, Malala Yousufzai by the Taleban in North West Pakistan. Although only 15 she has been campaigning since the age of 11 for the rights of girls to attend school. This campaign started with the publication in 2009 of a blog on the Â鶹ԼÅÄ's Urdu website, which was later published in English. Malala is now recovering from her injuries in hospital in Birmingham. We asked girls Malala’s age from the King Edward VI School in Handsworth, Birmingham to voice the blog in English.Onesies
We’re told the Onesie is the latest must have fashion item for this winter. Celebrities like Jennifer Ellison, Joey Essex and even Robbie Williams have been spotted out and about wearing the all-in-one rompers suits. Big names on the high street are reporting massive increase in sales. Debenhams say their sales have rocketed 155% in the past month. But why are they so popular? Is it the cutting edge styling by some designer names, the huge range of materials and colours they come in or the fact they’re as comfy as a big babygro? , from The Only Way is Essex and Vogue’s Alexandra Shulman tell Aasmah what they think of the Onesie.   Amy Childs wearing the Onesie. Photo: CAN Management.
