The Truth About Internships

Newsbeat presenter Tina Daheley finds out what an internship involves, how to be a good intern, and how to get your foot in the door at top companies.

With high levels of unemployment among 16-24 year olds and many facing tuition fee debt once they finish university, bagging the job you want can be really hard. Getting a foot on the career ladder early is a way of working towards a dream job in the future but - as more and more young people are discovering - starting out in the working world is virtually impossible without experience. That's where the internship comes in.

In the last few years internships have become an increasingly popular way for people to gain that all-important experience in the industry or the company of their dreams - and perhaps even gain full-time employment. But it's not that simple. Internships can vary depending on which company you go to and where you live; they can be paid or unpaid; and can last anything from a week to a year. So, it's very important to be clued up before taking on a placement.

Newsbeat's Tina Daheley hears from interns and employers to find out what it takes to bag a worthwhile internship and how to know when you're being ripped off. Speaking to Annie Mac, Nick Grimshaw and Adam Deacon, Tina reveals how getting experience early and persevering can lead to top jobs in industries you might not expect. Tracking the interning journey of Radio 1 listeners and speaking to campaigners and big bosses, Tina finds out what interns' rights are, what can aid success and the real truth about internships.
