Elderly care

Elderly care

Former cabinet minister David Blunkett has warned that families, neighbours and β€œyounger older people” will have to take a more active role in caring for people in their old age.

Μύ

Mr Blunkett, who served as Work and Pensions Secretary under Tony Blair, told the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ’s Inside Out programme that a political solution to the problem of paying for elderly care was unlikely to emerge.

Μύ

He said that raising taxes to pay for care was β€œridiculous politically because nobody will touch it with a barge pole” and that politicians are β€œscared of arguing about tax and spend”.

Μύ

He added: β€œWe need an imaginative, joined-up, holistic answer that mobilises and supports families with caring, that gets the community involved, that gets β€˜younger older’ people who are still active as part of the solution. This is about society as a whole rather than a financial cost[…] It’s essential because the money won’t be available to do it in any other way."

Μύ
The ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ’s ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Editor Mark Easton examines some of the radical solutions that are being tested around the UK to help tackle the elderly care crisis.

Μύ

These include the Isle of Wight’s innovative β€˜Care4Care’ scheme – where neighbours bank care credits for the time they spend helping elderly neighbours which they can then spend on their own care later in life.

Μύ

Mark also visits a happy β€˜homeshare’ in Essex and a unique retirement village in Yorkshire.

Nottinghamshire councillor calls for more private care home inspections

More inspections are needed at private care homes in Nottinghamshire, a Labour county councillor has claimed.

Μύ

His comments come after a private care home in Lambley was shut down this week following concerns being raised about the safety of residents.

Μύ

Councillor Chris Winterton said: "Because of cuts we have made I don't think there are enough inspectors to ensure the homes are safe."

The council said it takes "a pro-active approach" to monitoring the care homes.
