Domino Records
Zane Lowe looks at how Domino Records managed to beat the big labels and sign some of the best bands of the past 20 years, while surviving in an ever-changing music industry.
In the final part of Radio 1's Behind the Label series, we look at how Domino Records has managed to survive and beat the big labels to some of the best bands of the last decade, including Arctic Monkeys, Hot Chip and Franz Ferdinand.
Zane Lowe investigate some of their key releases, looks at their significance and hears from some of the artists themselves like Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip and Wild Beasts amongst others. He delves into the Domino offices in South West London and we hear from the people who work there like Laurence Bell, who started it all nearly two decades ago and Kurt Lane, who heads up the digital department.
The history of the label is told from it's beginnings in a bedroom in Putney, to the present day. We find out how Domino discover artists and why they do things like setting up their own radio station.
The lead singer of Hot Chip tells us about his time working at Domino - sending out the CDs to fans and writing press releases, years before signing to the label; Eugene McGuinness recalls the first time he'd ever heard of Domino was whist he was on the phone to them; and we chart how and why the label signed Pavement, Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys, looking at their impact and the wider significance.
This is part of Radio 1's Behind the Label series and, together with the other episodes in the series, will be available to listen to until 9.00pm on Monday 8 October.
