Brian Matthew plays the classic tracks and rare sounds from this distinctive era in pop music. This week features an answer song from John Lennon's father, Freddy Lennon.

Benny Hill was one of the first TV comics in the 60s to sign a recording deal which allowed him to unleash his comedic genius upon the world in the form of humorous records. We play Gather in the Mushrooms which shot straight up the charts to number 12 after he released it on Pye in 1961.

This week sees the end of our regular Answers and Sequels feature, so we go out on a high with an extremely rare track from an artist called Freddy Lennon. The track was released by John Lennon's father, Alfred, in answer to The Beatles song In My Life. At this stage, John had all but disowned his father over a personal dispute. The feud was fuelled further when Alfred turned up in 1965 complaining to the press about his living conditions, when his son was just a few miles away living in the lap of luxury. Alfred decided to turn his hand to pop music by releasing That's My Life (My Love, My Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ) and it proved to be a huge hit with the public before it mysteriously disappeared from record store shelves...

If that doesn't tempt you, Brian also plays songs and listener requests from The Shadows, The Pretty Things, The Anglos, Prince Buster and Manfred Mann with a few musical facts and figures thrown in for good measure.
