Robin Richmond's Centenary

Nigel Ogden marks the centenary of Robin Richmond, the original presenter of The Organist Entertains.

Nigel Ogden marks the centenary of Robin Richmond, the original presenter of The Organist Entertains. By the time The Organist Entertains first appeared on Radio 2, firstly as a pilot programme in April 1969 before becoming a weekly fixture in June that year, Robin Richmond had been one of the country's foremost light entertainment organists since the 1930s and was, amongst many other things, responsible for introducing the first two Hammond organs into the UK from America in 1935. As a teenager, The Organist Entertains was compulsory listening for me each week but, more than that, Robin Richmond was always a great supporter of young players - he did much to encourage their progress and my own early broadcasts on the programme in the 1970's were thanks to Robin and his kindness.
