Johnnie celebrates Tom Petty and his acclaimed 'Drop the Torpedoes' album, while Captain Sensible reflects on his experiences in the '70s.

This week Johnnie gets excited about the 70s rock heroes appearing at this year's Isle of Wight Festival. Not only is his hero Bruce Springsteen headlining but so too is Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.

We take the opportunity to celebrate Tom's debut, with a focus on his 1979 breakthrough album Damn The Torpedoes. Plagued by record company disputes, it was an album that nearly didn't get made as the band's roadie had to hide the tapes from the band so the label couldn't release the unfinished material.

On release it was hailed by Creem as the album that promised "to fulfil Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' manifest destiny". Johnnie spins tracks from the album alongside clips from Tom himself, talking about the album.

Also on the show Captain Sensible, singer, songwriter, guitarist and founder member of The Damned remembers the heady birth of punk in My 70s.

The Damned were the first punk act to release both a single and an album and went on to have nine top 40 singles in the UK. Having just celebrated their 35th anniversary, Captain Sensible remembers ripping up the rulebook and confesses a surprising love for Marc Bolan.
