The Travelling Man
The London-born and Irish-raised Maverick Sabre meets some of Hackney's young travellers, giving them a chance to tell their stories of life in the shadow of the Olympic Stadium.
For London born and Irish raised Maverick Sabre, home is where he finds a beat and a rhyme. Exclusively for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 1, he's returning to his Hackney roots to meet and collaborate with some of the young, Irish travellers now living in the borough. Maverick Sabre's debut mixtape was called the Travelling Man: this is his and their story.
At four years old Michael Stafford left Hackney with his family for a small town in Wexford, Ireland, where he made friends with travellers living nearby. Now, in a unique opportunity to gain access to an often isolated community, Maverick will use music to get to know the young travellers living in Hackney and give them the opportunity to tell their stories in their own words.
Living on legal sites all over Hackney, their homes are within the shadow of the Olympic Stadium and were displaced by its construction. In a few weeks' time, Maverick will be performing on the Marshes for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 1's Hackney Weekend, which is happening, literally, in their back garden.
For this Radio 1 Story we'll hear Maverick walk the streets of his home borough and across the marshes to meet the young travellers for the first time - giving voice to this often marginalised part of UK society. Big Fat Gypsy Weddings this ain't.
