Russell celebrates the art, craft and inspiration of the popular song and this week's playlist includes Peggy Lee, Frank Munn, and a centennial tribute to bandleader Harry Parry.
The stimulus of some new releases, coupled with the unavailability of a rarity that Russell has been after for years, are the principal ingredients this week. He starts with Peggy Lee's You've Got Possibilities, which leads on to a duet between Peggy and Bing Crosby on a new Crosby release - The Possibility's There.
80 years ago today, songwriter Herman Hupfeld made his only recording as singer/pianist: it is apparently not available anywhere, so we enjoy Hupfeld's most famous song, As Time Goes By, in Harry Nilsson's classic version instead.
After two curios from Irish tenor Frank Munn, one the highly moralistic Too Many Parties And Too Many Pals, we get the other side of the coin by the same writers - Don't Bring Lulu - as by Bobby Short. My Gal Sal is celebrated in a song by Paul Dresser who was immortalised in a Hollywood's biopic of the same name, a clip from which we hear featuring Nan Wynn [who ghosted for Rita Hayworth].
After a centennial tribute to Harry Parry, two items from a big set of 1961 recordings and two more from a new CD by Daryl Sherman complete the mixture!
