Mary Ann Kennedy presents great music from round the world and round the corner. Tonight features the world premiere of Conrad Molleson's 'Archipelago' - a rollicking adventure on the high seas set in the year 2021, the third in a series of four specially commissioned works to feature on the show. Andrew Cronshaw has a look at the Vietnamese 'dan bau' in this week's instruments of the world feature.

Archipelago

Set in 2021, the Arctic ice has all but melted away, rain falls unceasingly, sea levels rise drastically, submerging much of the country.

Archipelago is a dramatic and humorous musical voyage across a seascape, underscoring an emotionally gripping account of the struggle to overcome challenges presented by a rapidly changing climate.

Commencing with an interrupted radio bulletin, the crew set out upon a voyage from an island, formerly a mountain, culminating with their arrival into the capital city.

Interspersed by spiritual songs, Archipelago features the combined lush strings of Patsy Reid & Jenny Gardner, drums & bass from brothers Willy & Conrad Molleson, with horns and bleeps provided by the illustrious Marcus Del Sol. It finishes with a reading of 'Gondolas of South Bridge' by the Edinburgh Makar, Ron Butlin.
