Ahead of the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbour, Russell looks at the impact on popular music of the entry of the US to World War. He also remembers Lee Pockriss and Russ Garcia.
With the advent of the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbour, Russell investigates the impact on popular music of the entry of the US to World War. He starts with Fred and Doris Fisher's Blitzkrieg Baby sung by Una Mae Carlisle, through Friend & Tobias's We Did It Before, and Remember Pearl Harbor by Sammy Kaye to bluesman Doctor Clayton's Pearl Harbor Blues.
After a look at the contrasting attitude of British songwriters (Flanagan & Allen's Down Forget Me Not Lane), Russell reports the loss of songwriter Lee Pockriss, responsible for Catch A Falling Star and Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, which we hear.
Also departed is arranger-conductor-composer Russ Garcia who provided musical backings for a host of artists, a selection of whom we hear: Blossom Dearie, Mel Tormé, Anita O'Day, The Axidentals and, finally, Louis Armstrong.
