Celebrities trace their family trees to reveal the lives of their ancestors. Actor Larry Lamb was an adult before he discovered that his mother Jessie, now 84, was adopted as a baby. It is a revelation that fascinates Larry, and he is keen to discover more about this unknown side of his family. Larry especially wants to find out about his biological grandparents, as much for his mother's sake as his.

Larry learns that Jessie's birth parents were Albert and Catherine Day. He discovers that they married five months before Jessie was born, when Catherine was just seventeen, and that the marriage lasted less than a year. Following his grandfather's trail leads Larry to a surprising and exotic world of fairgrounds, travelling showmen and wild animals. Larry also sees a photograph of his elusive grandfather for the very first time. Larry's mum Jessie last saw her birth mother on her second birthday and never heard from her again. Larry is determined to find out what happened to Catherine. It is a detective hunt that takes him across the world to America, and ends in a poignant and emotional reunion with a long-lost relative.
