Russell continues to celebrate the art, craft and inspiration of the popular song. He investigates the unusual song-writing career of lyricist Charles Newman.
Russell investigates the unusual song-writing career of lyricist Charles Newman and the show opens with two examples of his writing skills in Why Don't We Do This More Often and Six Lessons from Madame La Zonga.
Next up are uncle and nephew Dan and Jimmy Grissom who sang with the bands of Jimmie Lunceford and Duke Ellington. We hear both and follow them with Dick Powell singing He's My Uncle - another Charles Newman song - as are I'm Painting the Town Red (Billie Holiday), You Can't Pull the Wool Over My Eyes (Jeff Healey), Take Another Guess (Banu Gibson) and Sweethearts On Parade (George Wein).
Impresario George Wein was behind the Newport Jazz Festival, which introduces, from High Society, Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby and Now You Has Jazz. Cole Porter had a song in the earlier Philadelphia Story (on which High Society was based) too - I've Got My Eyes On You. We hear it played by Bob Crosby's orchestra. Finally, from Nicki Leighton-Thomas, a trailer for next week and a tribute to recently deceased Fran Landesman.
